Andhra Pradesh’s monsoon brings heavy rain, humid air and sudden gusts, and all of it works on the nets and grills fitted to your balcony. Most storm damage is preventable with a few simple checks before, during and after the rains. This guide explains what to look for and why it matters, so your balcony stays safe through the season.

Why the monsoon is hard on nets

Three things happen at once. Wind pushes on the mesh like a sail, so every anchor point takes extra load. Rain and humidity speed up rust on ordinary steel hooks. And wet leaves, dust and bird debris collect in the mesh and add weight. A net that was tight and clean in May can be loose and heavy by August if nobody looks at it.

Before the rains: a ten-minute check

  1. Look at the anchor points. Check every hook, clip and bracket for rust, cracks in the wall around them and any movement when you push. Replace anything doubtful with stainless steel.
  2. Press the net. Push gently at several points. It should spring back. If it sags, it needs re-tensioning before the wind arrives.
  3. Inspect the edges and corners. Fraying is the first place a strong gust will start a tear. Patch small frays now.
  4. Clear debris. Remove leaves, twigs and nesting material so water can drain and the mesh stays light.
  5. Check the ceiling and slab fixings. Damp patches or hairline cracks near an anchor can mean the concrete is weak there.

During storms

  • Keep children and pets away from balcony nets during strong wind, because a tearing net is not a safe thing to lean on.
  • Do not hang heavy wet clothes, mats or furniture on a net. It is designed to stop falls and birds, not to carry laundry.
  • If a panel is flapping badly, note where, but do not lean out to fix it in the middle of a storm. Wait for calm weather.
  • Ceiling-mounted cloth hangers should not be overloaded with heavy wet items; lower them, remove the clothes and secure the rope if wind is strong.

After the season

Once the rains ease, do a slower inspection. Look for slack panels, small tears, rusty streaks and any anchor that has shifted. October is a good month for this, because repairs done now are finished long before the next storm. If you have pigeon nets, check the corners carefully: birds often test them right after a storm, when they are looking for dry shelter.

Invisible grills and cricket nets

Stainless-steel wire in an invisible grill needs little care, but check that the tracks are firmly fixed and the wires feel evenly tight. Water and dust can collect in the bottom track, so wipe it clean and make sure it can drain.

Cricket practice nets on a terrace take the wind hardest. Check the poles, base plates and cables, and if the design allows it, lower or loosen the net before a severe storm. Patch small holes quickly, because a hole grows fast in wind. Our cricket practice nets page explains how we plan poles and cables for exposed roofs.

What good fixings look like

The best protection against monsoon damage is good hardware from the start. Use stainless-steel hooks, clips and cable, anchors set into solid concrete or masonry rather than plaster, and mesh that is UV-stabilised so sun and rain do not make it brittle. If your net was fitted with cheap steel or plastic fixings, replacing them before the rains is a small cost that prevents a large problem.

When to call for help

Call us if you notice sagging that will not go away, rust on several fixings, tears longer than your hand, or any anchor that moves when you push it. Send a photo on WhatsApp and we can usually tell you whether a quick fix will do. You can also book a free inspection at your home, and we will check every fixing and give you a written quote for any repairs that are needed.
